about

Instant Smile have emerged from a tumultuous three years (both personally and globally) with their new EP, 4 x 2. Guitarist Greg Phoenix and drummer Erin Berry each wrote an original and chose a cover song for their upcoming release, due out October 4th, 2023. The album is a reflection on the times we live in, and based on the covers the duo chose to include, the times- they never really were a-changin.

Phoenix penned the opening track "Thorazine Bender"; a depiction of entrapment in a sodium twilight world of machine gods, artificial friendships, and numbing churn. His cover of the title track from Yes's 1970 album "Time And a Word" tempers the dystopian outlook of the opener with Jon Anderson's hopeful words calling for change- the word is love, the time is now.

Berry's original "Crazy" reflects on her frustration with the distance and disconnect among fellow humans, as well as her own surrender to the same behavior she complains about seeing in others. Her chosen cover song, Deep Purple's "No No No" echoes the same disillusionment, and the fact that the sentiments expressed in that 1971 release still ring just as true today...well, let's see how we're doing in another 50 years.

4 x 2 is available on both 10" vinyl as well as CD. Prior to the release of this EP, Instant Smile's catalog was only available as digital singles. The duo felt the time was right for a true physical release, especially for these particular songs being released into today's world. This album signifies many things for Phoenix and Berry: a revolt against the impermanence and unreality of a digital world; a call for change - both in their own words as well as those of their musical heroes; a fresh start in their new Athens, GA home after 14 years in Philadelphia. This project has been a long time coming for Instant Smile, and they are glad that for 4 x 2, finally, the time is now.
